Blackfoot School District Powwow sees newly crowned royalty & contest dancing

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot School District Powwow was May 2 at Blackfoot High School where royalty was selected, graduates were honored and dancers competed.

Leo EagleSpeaker served as emcee. Kyle Nipwater was arena director ad Spring Creek was host drum. Color Guard: Fort Hall Veterans Association, Other drums were Ghost Canyon, Young Buffalo, and Medicine Thunder. Head man was Tanner Countryman a Head woman: Wappii Skylee Osborne.


Newly crowned royalty for the 2026-27 year, including Miss Indian Blackfoot High School Elizabeth Trahant, Miss Mountain View Middle School Sadie March and Miss Blackfoot Heritage 6th Grade Tiva Graves.

BSD royalty for 2026-2027 was announced. Elizabeth Trahant is the new Miss Indian Blackfoot High School and first attendant is Kyrane Beasley. Sadie March is Miss Mountain View Middle School, first attendant is Sophia Edmo Guardipee, second attendant is Amirah Eldridge, and third attendant is Arianna Edmo Guardipee. Miss Blackfoot Heritage Sixth Grade is Tiva Graves.


Family of the late Merle Smith were present for the memorial.

Former BHS teacher, the late Merle Smith was remembered Saturday evening where Lloyd George, BSD Indian Education Committee chairman, presented his son Magic Smith with a Pendleton blanket. Spring Creek Singers sang an honor song and Carolyn Smith and other family members spoke about his strong connection to the students. Students also recalled memories.

An honor song was done for BHS Native student graduates and powwow attendees shook their hands afterward. Numerous specials were conducted for outgoing royalty and head staff.

The Powwow results are as follows: Golden Age Women: first-Sandra Plentywounds, second-Nummie Osborne, third-Wendy Farmer; Golden Age Men: first-James Tone, second-Gary Watson.

Jr. Girls Traditional: first-Sophia Edmo, second-Amirah Eldridge, third-Vallerie Three Irons; Jr. Girls Jingle: first-Lilly Fred, second-Paisley Buckskin, third-Elaya Villarreal; Jr. Girls Fancy: first-Ellanis Stagner, second-Humble Coby, third-Darling Pebeahsy.

Jr. Boys Traditional: first-Virgil Trujillo, second-Adonis Osborne; Jr. Boys Grass: first-Conner Honena, second-Darryl Yazzie, third-Denver Yazzie; Jr. Boys Fancy: first-Johnny Yazzie.

Teen Girls Traditional: first-Zids Arrow White, second-Susan Avila-Dixey, third-Envy Beasley; Teen Girls Jingle: first-Logan Wahtomy, second-Kimora Graves Pevo, third-Tee’Araha Anderson; Teen Girls Fancy: first-Cambrilynn Buckskin, second-Enika Mae Whelan, third-Tia Worley.

Women’s Traditional: first-Ontaria Arrow White, second-Summer Baldwin, third-Tay’a Osborne; Women’s Jingle: first-Atalya Benally, second-Zahnive George Bettles; Women’s Fancy: first-Sally Anne Thomas, second-Ashra Benally, third-Levi Other Medicine.
